Germany vs England…despite the match being a friendly, there is something about this fixture which will always give it a special place in football.  With the Euro 2016 finals just around the corner, this match will give both managers a chance to look at players within their respective squads.  Having said that, given the history between the two teams, both will be determined to win the game.

In terms of the England squad, Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater is the stand-out name selected by manager, Roy Hodgson.  Leicester have enjoyed a tremendous season in the Premier League and despite Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez getting the majority of the headlines, Drinkwater’s consistency in anchoring the midfield has been excellent.  Dele Alli may be ahead of Drinkwater in the international pecking order but if the former Manchester United youth team player can put in a good performance, it may help to make Hodgson’s mind up when it comes to risking the selection of Jack Wilshere in the summer.

An opportunity has also opened up for Danny Rose to cement a place in the squad for France.  Leighton Baines has been struggling for Everton this season and if Rose can bring the same energy and pace to the team, which he has shown at Tottenham this season, he could book himself a place on the plane.

With some new faces attempting to seal a place in the squad with good performances in Berlin, there are others who are looking to prove they are still worth their place.  Wayne Rooney is sure to be in the Euro 2016 squad, as is Harry Kane and that leaves the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Theo Walcott and Jamie Vardy, with plenty to do, if they want to make it.  Sturridge and Walcott in particular, who have struggled for fitness and form this season, should be concerned.

In terms of the match itself, Germany should hold no fear for England.  Yes, they are world champions and 10/3 favourites with Coral to win their fourth Henri Delaunay Trophy but recent form has been poor.  Joachim Low’s men have been beaten in Ireland and Poland and were also held at home by the former during Euro 2016 qualifying, whereas England qualified with a 100% record.  However, England’s group could hardly be called testing and they went down 2-0 against Spain in November, their last biggest test on the road.

Germany have failed to shine in their recent home friendly matches, winning just one of the last six but playing England should ensure they raise their game.  Low knows time is running out, for his team to put in a good performance. On the other hand, England fans will be hoping Hodgson uses his in-form forwards and takes the opportunity to really attack Germany but this is highly unlikely, if previous form is anything to go by.

There are players in the squad, who are genuinely playing for a place at Euro 2016 and this could work in England’s favour coming in to this match.  However, Germany are always going to be a tough proposition and they have real quality throughout the team.  Low is spoilt for choice in the goalkeeping department and the likes of Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and Thomas Muller, provide the team with a fantastic spine.
