The Australian Open Betting Preview 2016

A new year and a new installment of the Australian Open for tennis fans. If you’re feeling the cold of a UK winter, here’s your chance to recline next to the heater and watch these guys sweat it out in 40 degrees. Brilliant. There are some great things about tournaments like these – the tennis with A$40 million at stake, the crowds, the lines-men and -women dodging balls at 200km/h, and of course those odds! Here’s a wrap of what to expect in the Men’s event along with Key Dates and Betting Odds below.

What about the Men’s? Well, we’re glad you asked. The usual names have popped up lately and it’s worth recapping just how dominant World Number 1 Novak Djokovic has been. The huge Serb has won four of the past five Australia Opens, including last year’s event, and none other than the Brits’ own Andy Murray has been on the receiving end of three of those triumphs. Djokovic has been on fire with an enormous 2015, winning no less than three Majors, six Masters and 11 titles, and achieving a ranking points record. This being the case, few would put big cash on anyone aside from him… but that’s what makes betting so fun.

Murray didn’t fare too badly himself, leading his countrymen and women to victory in the Davis Cup by winning all eight of his singles rubbers. He finished the year at number 2 and whilst many would argue he’s a long way off matching Djokovic pound for pound, he certainly has it in him and it’s worth watching for decent odds.

The once undeniable Roger Federer last won a major Open (Wimbledon) in 2012, and has since remained in the top few in rankings without dominating headlines. He has had a few runner-up results in fairness, and notched his 1000th career victory in 2015, but since injury issues three years back we’ve rarely seen the old Federer. Few believe he’s past it though, and there is a decent argument out there for money on him to recapture that world-beater attitude and go all the way at this year’s event. He last won the Australian Open in 2010, and since (and including) that win the runner-up has either been Murray or Rafael Nadal – every year. So either of those two would be keen to be on the other side of the podium this year.

Despite that drive, strong money is still with Djokovic and Federer.

But who knows – Federer’s Swiss counterpart Stan Wawrinka came through the shock winner two years back, so could we be in for a dark horse victory again? If there’s one Open that could throw up something like that, it tends to be the Australian one.
